The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme

The International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma programme is a comprehensive and rigorous two-year curriculum, externally examined, for students between sixteen and nineteen. Based on the pattern of no single country, it is a deliberate compromise between the specialization required in some national systems and the breadth preferred in others. The general objectives of the Diploma programme are to provide students with a balanced education, to facilitate geographic and cultural mobility and to promote international understanding through a shared academic experience. The IB Diploma has become a symbol of academic integrity and intellectual promise.

In an increasingly mobile world, the International Baccalaureate Diploma is the foremost international certification for entrance to universities around the world.

IB Student Learning at NIS

The student who satisfies its demands demonstrates a strong commitment to learning, both in terms of the mastery of subject content and in the development of the skills and discipline necessary for success in further education.

The Diploma Programme :

• equips students with the skills and attitudes necessary for success in higher

  education and employment

• combines breadth with depth within the subjects studied

• emphasizes critical, compassionate thinking

• promotes global vision

Theory of Knowledge (TOK) is a key element in encouraging students to appreciate other cultural perspectives. TOK challenges students:

• to question the basis of  knowledge

• to be aware of subjective and ideological biases

• to develop the ability to analyse evidence

The Extended Essay, of 4,000 words or less, acquaints diploma candidates with the kind of independent research and writing skills expected by universities. It offers students:

• the opportunity to investigate a topic of special interest

• a way to add breadth to the subject studied

• an opportunity to exhibit research, analysis, investigation and essay writing skills

learned throughout the IB diploma course
