Activities
The
Student Council
The
Student Council in the Elementary School consists of
students who are elected at each grade level. The council
affords the students opportunities to take part in the life
of the school and educates them in the ways of democratic
participation. Members are responsible for organizing school
functions on a regular basis.
Field Trips
Educational field trips are encouraged at NIS and considered
a vital part of a course of study. They are organized to
allow students to participate in regional events to enhance
their overall educational experiences.
Buddy
Classes
Students are paired (Buddied Up) with a class from a different
age group to work together on their reading, writing, drama
and language skills. This allows the younger students to
develop trust in an older student and the older students to
develop a sense of responsibility for a younger student.
Student Led Conferences
As part of our PYP
development, the Elementary section has recently
started to introduce a system of Student Led
Conferences. During this process each student
selects examples of work from their portfolio to
share with their parents.
As the student and parent move
from station to station the student is in charge of
explaining each piece of work, leading the activity
and asking and answering the questions relevant to
the work. This conference is an opportunity for the
student to take a leadership position and accept
responsibility for the exchange of information. The
teacher playes no part in the process.
All the parents and students
who helped us on the "practice day" were very
impressed with the process and results of the
conference.
In the following school year
all students will be trained to lead their own
conferences and the parents from this year's
conference will be able to encourage other parents
to take part.
